Clarification on PressReader v2 iOS support

For clarification purposes, PressReader v2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch released this past Monday (October 18, 2010) through the iTunes App Store supports iOS 3.2 and higher for iPad and iOS 4 and higher for iPhone/iPod Touch.

We realize that for those who have not yet upgraded their iPhone or iPod Touch, this creates a problem as PressReader does not function on iOS 3.1.3.  While we are working on supporting 3.1.3 in our next release (with limited functionality), we strongly encourage you to update your device to take full advantage of PressReader’s latest greatest features along with those planned for future releases, including but not limited to:

  • A new PDF rendering system which will allow deeper zoom
  • Two-page spreads in landscape mode
  • Article bookmarking

While we realize there are iPhone and iPod Touch users who are reluctant to upgrade due to known issues with iOS 4, rest assured that an upgrade to iOS 4.1 will help avoid the majority of these issues and will most importantly, allow you to get the best out of the PressReader application.

Cheers,

Michael

The first generation iPod Touch cannot be upgraded to iOS 3.2 so upgrading is not an option whether you strongly encourage it or not.

Hey Michael. Thanks for the comment.

I agree that it’s useless to strongly encourage an update when it’s not even possible. 🙂

The good news is the next version of PressReader (which will be available soon) will once again support iOS version 3.1.x for iPhone, iPhone 3G and 1st and 2nd gen. iPod Touch. The unfortunate part is devices running anything below iOS 4 on the iPhone or iPod Touch will lack PressReader’s new functionality.

Hope that helps for now – we’re definitely anxious to get readers just like you back on PressReader!
      Cheers,
      Michael

Will version 2 automatically download papers I am subscribed to when it is running in the background? This is the killer feature I’m looking for. It’d also be nice if it alerted me to the morning paper – play a sound and display a message saying which paper has been downloaded.

Hi Stephen. Thanks for your question. PressReader V2.1 does automatically download publications while running in the background. Just make sure you have the most recent iOS version installed on your device (which supports multi-tasking).

Thanks for the suggestions as well. I’ve forwarded them to our product development team.

      Cheers,
      Michael
