NewspaperDirect partners with Samsung – PressReader included in new GALAXY Tab “Readers Hub”

It’s official! Earlier today at Monaco Media Forum 2010, NewspaperDirect announced a new partnership with Samsung Electronics that will see PressReader, PressDisplay.com’s reading app, come pre-loaded on the “Readers Hub” of the new Samsung GALAXY Tab device.

With the announcement, GALAXY Tab users will now have access to the world’s largest digital newspaper kiosk which includes over 1,700 full-content publications from 92 countries in 48 languages!

Watch Igor Smirnoff, NewspaperDirect’s Vice President, Digital, officially announce the new partnership during the Media Forum’s “New Waves” session (5:30 mark of video):

The significance of the announcement was certainly not lost on Steve Cho, Director of Samsung Media Solutions America and Alex Kroogman, NewspaperDirect’s CEO:

“When it came to news content, we wanted to offer our customers the best in the industry, and PressDisplay service from NewspaperDirect fit the bill,” said Steve Cho, director, Samsung Media Solutions America of Samsung Electronics. “When the Samsung GALAXY Tab goes on sale in Europe within weeks, owners of the device will be able to use PressReader in the Readers Hub to download local, national and international titles available on PressDisplay.com, and read them in their entirety.”

“With PressReader pre-installed on the new Samsung GALAXY Tab, NewspaperDirect just added close to two thousand daily newspapers to this new, Android-powered tablet. Publications instantly available include titles from Postmedia Network of Canada, Fairfax of Australia and New Zealand, News Corporation, Independent News Media, and Tribune Company, to name a few,” said Alex Kroogman, CEO of NewspaperDirect. “We are focused on, and committed to, opening new channels of distribution and revenue for all our existing publishing partners, and we continue to welcome new publishers from around the world. As the global leader in newspaper distribution, our mission is to ensure that our publishing partners’ content is made immediately available to their readers on all the new and hot devices hitting the market today and in the future.”

We’re ecstatic at the opportunity to partner with Samsung and as always, we’re really looking forward to hearing your feedback on the reading experience the new app provides!

How about android for other phones like my Evo which I bought months ago hoping to have press reader on it? It has been in a LONG beta. Happy for the galaxy folks. How about the rest of us?

Another vote for the Android app – I have just bought a ZTE Blade phone and its crying out for Press Reader.

I hope it’s not going to be limited to v2.2 Froyo, either!

Hi Gary – thanks for the comment.
PressReader for Android is just a few short weeks away so please stay tuned.
Also, it won’t be limited to Froyo v2.2. Hope this helps for now :).

    Hi Michael

I have just subscribed to this service on my Galaxy Tab – is it really free?

Hi Neil. Thanks for the question.
The first 7 issues available through PressReader on the GALAXY Tab are provided on a trial basis courtesy of NewspaperDirect. After these trial issues are used, titles can either be purchased individually or in conjunction with a paid subscription to PressDisplay.com.
Hope this helps and hope your new GALAXY Tab is treating you well :).

I noticed this appear on the Galasy S phone after the recent Froyo update but when trying to use it says “Service will be available soon”. Will this “app” actually offer anything better that what can be found via google?

Hi Jez, thanks for your question.

If reading the entire newspaper is something that appeals to you, then PressReader is definitely an app you should check out :). With a subscription to PressReader, you’ll be able to access a growing list of over 1,700 local, national and international newspapers in full replica format. You’ll also be able to take advantage of lots of cool interactive features such as flipping pages like you would in print, panning, zooming and rotating pages, articles and photos, reading articles in text view, listening to on-demand audio, searching online across titles, etc.

So to answer your question, yes, PressReader offers more than what can be found on Google. If you appreciate more than just top stories and the latest headlines, PressReader is worth checking out. And remember, if you’d like to test the app out (when it becomes available on your device), feel free to do so with the 7 free trial issues that are provided courtesy of NewspaperDirect.

      Hope that helps!
