Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What’s the difference between PressReader and PressDisplay.com?

Answer: PressReader is a reading application designed to complement the PressDisplay.com subscription service.  With a subscription to PressDisplay.com, individuals are able to download PressReader and read their favorite publications on their device of choice whether they are online or off.

Question: How many devices can I authorize with my PressDisplay.com account?

Answer: With any PressDisplay.com account, you are able to authorize a maximum of 3 computers AND 3 smart mobile devices.

Question: Why are some titles on PressDisplay.com, but not on PressReader?

Answer: Any inconsistencies found between the content available through the PressDisplay.com service and the content available through the PressReader application are made at the discretion of individual publishers.

At any time, publishers reserve the right to add or remove their publication from platform specific PressReader applications.

If a specific publication is available through the PressDisplay.com service and NOT through the PressReader application on a specific platform, NewspaperDirect encourages you to contact the publisher directly to request it be supported on PressReader.

Question: Can I use PressReader to read publications on my eReader?

Answer: eReader users can easily export titles directly from PressDisplay.com through a USB or WiFi connection (when available), without having to download PressReader.  Our growing list of supported eReaders include the:

  • Amazon Kindle
  • Barnes & Noble Nook
  • enTourage eDGe
  • Interead COOL-ER
  • Neolux NUUK Book
  • iRex Digital Readers
  • Sony Reader Digital Books

To do so, open any SmartNavigation enabled publication found on PressDisplay.com (designated with the SmartNavigation symbol ),  and click on the “Export to eReader” link located to the left of the front page of the publication. A dialogue box will appear allowing you to choose your eReader.

Question: What are PressDisplay.com “credits” and how do they apply to my subscription?

Answer: PressDisplay.com “credits” apply to the purchase of publications through the PressDisplay.com service on a Pay As You Go basis.

1 PressDisplay.com credit equals 99 cents.

The majority of publications available through the PressDisplay.com service (and by extension, the PressReader application) require 1 credit for purchase on a Pay As You Go basis.  In some instances, specific publications may require more than 1 credit for purchase at the request of individual publishers.

As PressDisplay.com credits are included in both the Personal Unlimited and Corporate Unlimited subscription types, only Pay As You Go subscribers are directly affected by the credit value assigned to individual publications.

Question: How do I ensure that the publications I have downloaded to the My Library section of PressReader for iPad/iPhone are not deleted when I upgrade to the latest PressReader and/or iOS version?

Answer: To ensure the publications you have downloaded to the My Library section of PressReader for iPad/iPhone are not deleted when you upgrade to the latest PressReader and/or iOS version, please follow the subsequent steps:

  1. Navigate to your iPad or iPhone’s global “Settings”.
  2. Tap the PressReader application.
  3. Ensure the Backup Content switch is turned to On.

Please note that due to the size of the publications stored in the My Library section of PressReader for iPad/iPhone, the Backup Content switch is set to Off by default to avoid the length of time it takes to back up your device through iTunes.

I am using your iPad app and I am extremely disappointed with the performance of this product. It is unstable, freezes for no reason and is very frustrating to use. Because it is so unreliable, I cannot enjoy reading my newspaper. I have even had the app close on its own while attempting to turn a page. Until these problems are addressed, I would discourage anyone from using this app.

      Hi Marilyn,

Thanks for your comment. Your sentiment is one we’ve heard frequently over the last several weeks. Plain and simple, PressReader V2.0 missed the mark – at least from a stability point of view. For that, the whole PressReader team apologizes.

I am however really excited to tell you that PressReader V2.1 was submitted to Apple this past Wednesday (November 10th). I can assure you that this version will be much, much more stable and will come with some great new features and functionality.

Hope you’re willing to give it a try when it’s available and thank you for your patience in the meantime.

      Michael

Honestly this is by far the best app i have used. I also showed family and friends and they are amazed at the amount of pepers available and the fact its presented to you in paper format. Absolute pleasure to read!!! Please keep up the good work your team has done an outstanding job.

    Well done!

Very impressive reader. I like reading some of the financial papers as well. Where’s the Wallstreet Journal? Thanks.

  4. December 30, 2010 at 12:49 am

Thanks Jeffrey! I’m glad you are enjoying PressReader. We did have WSJE and WSJA for a while, but the publisher decided to do their own app. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t want to have their cake and eat it too with both apps (we do pay them for every copy read by subscribers). Perhaps they don’t need the money 🙂

Anyway, we’ll keep trying and if you feel so inclined, write them and ask them to get back on PressReader – every little bit helps! 🙂

    Cheers

Wow ! This appears to be a really good 1st version ! Thanks.

I would appreciate that future releases of the app use the APP2SD flag so that the application can be installed on the SD card, if possible.

    Hi,

I just got the pressreader app and was thinking about getting the “personal unlimited” subscription. Unfortunately it doesnt state anywhere how long I have to take the subscription for. Can I just cancel it any time or do I have to pay for a year or something like that?

    • Michael Oksinski
      January 11, 2011 at 8:07 pm

Hi Daniel. Personal Unlimited subscriptions are paid on a month-by-month basis and can be canceled at any time. To cancel, just send an email to pressdisplay@newspaperdirect.com.
      Hope this helps!
      Cheers,
      Michael

A great app. Thankyou. I appreciate being able to choose the audio for some articles. However after I activate the reading of text in an article, how do I turn it off?

      March 16, 2011 at 5:15 pm

      Hi Dorothy,
Thanks for your comment. Once the on-demand audio option is selected, a pause button appears in its place. You will need to click on that pause button to stop the audio. Let me know if you have any additional questions!
      Cheers,
      Michael

Hi, I love Press Reader as it is one of the only ways to get Canadian newspapers on an android platform – and the selection of newspapers is truly amazing!

I’m considering buying a Xoom Tablet and was wondering if Press Reader is available in a Honeycomb specialized format or if there are plans to make a specialized app for the Honeycomb platform.

Thanks, and keep up the great work!

    • Michael Oksinski
      March 30, 2011 at 3:46 pm

      Hi Robb,

Thanks for the support! 🙂 PressReader currently works on the Honeycomb platform but it will be even better with the next release (i.e. the zoom functionality will be improved). I actually managed to test it myself on the Xoom yesterday and I thought it looked pretty darn good :).

Thanks and have fun with your new Xoom!
